AKRON — Adrienne Dick and Hannah Fulk hit home runs, and Jamie Kertes and Paris Imholz combined on a six-hitter to lead Bowling Green’s softball team to a 5-0 win Thursday over Toledo in the Mid-American Conference tournament. BOX SCORE The Falcons, seeded third, improved to 36-21 overall and play MAC regular-season champion Ball State in another elimination game Friday morning at 11. Ball State (39-14) was a 3-1 loser to fifth-seeded Western Michigan later Thursday. Toledo, seeded eighth, finished the season 18-38. Dick’s homer opened the scoring in the top of the third inning before the Falcons put the game away with two more runs in the fourth, and single runs in the fifth and seventh. BG fell into the losers bracket of the double-elimination tournament Wednesday with a 2-1 loss to No. 6 Central Michigan in a game it left eight runners on base. Against Toledo, BG didn’t have a hit until Dick homered. The Falcons struck out three times in the first two innings and popped up to the catcher for another out. “That was a big home run, to break the ice,” BG coach Shannon Salsburg said. “We were having a hard time. We were struggling offensively.” Dick, a junior catcher who shares the position with Erica Stratton, didn’t play against Central. She’s hitting just .079, receiving just 63 at-bats in 30 games (27 starts). The homer was her first RBI of the season. “I woke up with a preminition that she was going to have a big game,” Salsburg said. “Defensively, she’s going to work with our pitcher to get every strike that we possibly could. To see her get that big hit was a lot of fun.” The Falcons scored twice in the third on Katie Yoho’s single and Stratton’s sacrifice fly. BG added another run in the fifth on Paige Berger’s RBI single and scored its final run in the seventh on Fulk’s home run. “Today, we were able to make things happen,” Salsburg said. Fulk, the leadoff hitter in the order, was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Berger, the No. 3 hitter, was 2-for-4. Five different Falcons accounted for the teams seven hits. Fulk’s homer was her 14th season, extending her single-season school record. “She’s the catalyst to our offense. She gets on base and puts pressure on the defense,” Salsburg said. Kertes pitched the first five innings, allowing four hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Imholz finished, allowing hits and striking out two. “Both of them had a great outing,” Salsburg said. The Falcons play Ball State for the third time in a week, after losing 8-5, 6-0 in Muncie, Ind., last weekend to finish the regular season, BG needs one win to tie the school record of 37 set in 1992 and 2006. “We’re going to do the same thing we’ve done all year and focus on us and the process,” Salsburg said. |
