BUFFALO, N.Y. – Buffalo overcame an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat Bowling Green’s men’s basketball team, 68-65, Saturday. The Falcons led by as many as 12 points in the first, but BG did not score a field goal over the final 5:45 of the game. BG’s A’uston Calhoun made two free-throws with 3:57 to play to tie the score at 63-63. Over the next three minutes, neither team was able to score until Buffalo’s Javon McCrea scored inside with 31 seconds left for a 65-63 lead. “Give him credit. He’s one of the best players and one of the toughest covers in our league,’’ BG head coach Louis Orr said about McCrea. “If you give him inch, he can make it happen and he did.’’ BG’s Jordon Crawford missed a 3-pointer with 14 seconds left and McCrea added two free throws to give the Bulls a four-point edge. Crawford quickly pushed the ball up the floor and was fouled with seven seconds left, making both free throws to cut the deficit to two. The Falcons fouled Buffalo’s Jarryn Skeete with four seconds left and he made 1-of-2 shots to give Bowling Green a chance. Crawford’s pull-up three at the buzzer was short and the Bulls escaped with a win. It was the third consecutive game in which the Falcons had a three-pointer in the air late to decide the outcome. Crawford made a three with six seconds left to beat Eastern Michigan, but missed late shots against Miami and now Buffalo. “I give our guys credit ... they keep plugging away,’’ Orr said. “We have been in a lot of close games and we’ve been unfortunate with a lot of close losses. ‘‘We had a couple of good looks to tie the game a couple of times late; we didn’t make the shots.’’ Crawford became the 41st player in school history to score 1,000 career points on a fastbreak layup early in the game. His quick start – scoring 10 points in the first six minutes – helped Bowling Green jump out to a 15-3 lead. The Falcons took a 33-25 lead into the locker room for halftime. The Falcons were unable to build on the eight-point lead at the start of the second half. Buffalo used a 10-2 run to tie the score. “The first three minutes of the second half probably was the difference in the game,’’ Orr said. “They erased an eight-point lead in a hurry. You know teams are going to go on runs, but you don’t want to give up an eight-point lead that quick.’’ The Falcons did come back and led 53-44 after Richaun Holmes’ three-point play with 11:43 to play. But Buffalo countered with nine straight points to again tie the score. The game remained close the rest of the way. Crawford’s layup with 5:45 left gave BG a 60-59 lead, However, the Falcons were 0-of-7 from the field with two turnovers the rest of the game. Crawford scored a team-high 18 points and added four assists to just one turnover. Calhoun, who was 5-of-20 from the field, finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and a blocked shot. Chauncey Orr had a strong game, with 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting, to go with four rebounds and a steal. Holmes came off the bench for seven points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots.
