SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — Bowling Green’s hockey team worked its road magic again Sunday night. The Falcons played well offensively and defensively to post a 7-0 victory over Lake Superior in the third and deciding game of their Central Collegiate Hockey Association first-round playoff series. BG, 15-19-5 overall, will visit second-place and No. 11 Notre Dame (21-12-3) in a best-of-3 quarterfinal series next weekend. BOX SCORE CCHA SCORES The Falcons forced Game 3 with another solid performance Saturday when it posted a 6-3 win over the Lakers. Lake Superior (17-21-1) opened the series with a 2-0 win Friday in a game BG wasn’t sharp. The first-round playoff series win was BG’s third straight and all three have come on the road. And in each series, the Falcons lost Game 1.

The Bowling Green State University men’s basketball team opens Mid-American Conference tournament play Monday. The No. 6 Falcons (13-18) host No. 11 Miami (8-21) in a first-round game at the Stroh Center with tipoff at 7 p.m. Bowling Green and Miami split this season with the Falcons winning 52-44 at home on Feb. 27 and Miami winning on its home court, 63-60 on Jan. 16. Bowling Green is coming off a 76-65 win over Buffalo sparked by 26 points from Jordon Crawford. Miami lost its ninth straight game, a 58-54 decision at Ohio, in its regular-season finale. The RedHawks had a 12-point lead in the second half before Ohio rallied for the win. Allen Roberts, Miami’s leading scorer at 12.7 ppg with a team-high 45 3-pointers, has been lost for the season. Roberts, Bill Edwards and Drew McGhee have all suffered season-ending knee injuries for Miami. A slight meniscus tear in his right knee was discovered last week when Roberts underwent an MRI. He missed the entire 2011-12 season with cartilage and bone issues in his knee.

It takes a lot to surprise a veteran coach such as Jennifer Roos. Roos is in her 12th year as a coach with Bowling Green State University’s women’s basketball, so she has experience in a lot of different areas. This year’s current edition of the Falcons, with Roos in her first season as head coach, shocked her before BG’s Mid-American Conference first-round tournament matchup against Kent State in the Stroh Center Saturday. PHOTO GALLERY The Falcons showed they were ready to play when they started their morning shoot-around before Roos even got onto the floor. Bowling Green displayed that same degree of readiness when the game started. The Falcons took control early, went on to lead by 50 points in the second half, before settling for a 76-35 victory. With the win Bowling Green, now 21-9, advances to play Western Michigan in the second-round of the MAC tournament Wednesday. Tipoff is at noon in Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena.
