Bowling Green’s baseball team had plenty of reasons to be happy Saturday. Most of all, the Falcons played well most of the day en route to a 14-6, 5-1 sweep of Akron in a Mid-American Conference doubleheader at Steller Field. BG totaled 20 hits, received good pitching and was solid defensively overall to reward head coach Danny Schmitz with his 600th and 601st career wins. The Falcons — who have won six straight overall and five consecutive MAC games — are 13-19 overall and 8-6 in the MAC East Division. Akron is 8-29, 5-9. “We played well in all three phases (pitching, hitting and defense),” said Schmitz, who is 601-569-5 overall and 312-298-1 in the Mid-American Conference during his tenure. The only negative for BG was its four errors in Game 1 that led to Akron’s first three runs and 3-2 deficit in the third inning. But BG quickly rallied with nine runs in the bottom of the third to put the game away. “Those were good team victories,” Schmitz said.

Twenty-four current and former NFL players will take part in the first NFL Sports Journalism & Communications Boot Camp from May 13-16 at Bowling Green State University. With the new longer offseason, the boot camp is one of a record 10 training programs for post-NFL careers that NFL Player Engagement offers to current and former players. The four-day program will focus on improving each player's writing skills for newspapers, radio, and the expanding digital media industry. A field exercise at a Toledo Mud Hens home game will include a mock press conference as part of the player's game coverage. Players will write and record their own radio commentary as part of one of the other planned exercises. Several of the outside faculty from the NFL's popular Broadcast Boot Camp will also be involved as well as former NFL players-turned-journalists Matt Bowen (Chicago Tribune), Matt Chatham (Boston Herald), and Bucky Brooks (NFL.com and NFL Network).
