Defensively there were a lot of positives for the Bowling Green men’s basketball team Sunday against Northern Illinois.
That was not the case offensively as the Falcons struggled to score the entire game.
The end result was a 45-36 loss to NIU at the Stroh Center.
‘‘This was a game where offense was a struggle at both ends,’’ BG head coach Louis Orr said.
‘‘Defensively we have been good,’’ he added. ‘‘We’ve just had trouble scoring, plain and simple.’’
Against NIU, the Falcons shot 29.3 percent from the field (12-of-41) and 23.1 percent on 3-pointers (3-of-13). BG also struggled tremendously from the free-throw line, going 9-of-21 for the game (42.9 percent), including a 1-of-11 effort (9.1 percent) in the second half.
‘‘The way they (NIU) played defense, they really tried to fill the gaps, the driving lanes, and make you have to move the ball and attack,’’ Orr said. ‘‘They did a pretty good job of making us work to get the ball inside, and when we did, we got the ball outside the lane.
‘‘We’ll make some adjustments. We’ll do what we can to try to generate offense without sacrificing defense, and things will get better,’’ Orr added.
NIU held a 28-16 lead at the half as the two teams combined for 19 turnovers, and only 14 made field goals in the first half.

Bowling Green's football team will play only five of the schools in the Mid-American Conference East in the 2014 season.
On Monday, the MAC released the matchups for 2014, but not the dates.
BG is not playing traditional rival Miami in 2014 or 2015.
The Falcons, defending MAC East champions, will host Buffalo and Kent State from the East and Ball State and Western Michigan from the MAC West.
The Falcons play Akron, UMass, and Ohio from the East on the road, and also face arch-rival Toledo in a road game.

In an early-season statement game, Bowling Green women’s basketball team showed its mettle Sunday afternoon.
Facing the preseason favorite to win the Mid-American East, the Falcons rolled past Akron, 81-65, at the Stroh Center.
‘‘The bull’s-eye is actually on their (Akron’s) back for once,’’ said BG senior Jillian Halfhill. ‘‘We took it that we were just going to go and play our heart’s out, and show everyone what we’ve got.’’
‘‘We had a lot to prove,’’ BG head coach Jennifer Roos said. ‘‘We really emphasized protecting home court, and our kids really stepped up to the plate.’’
