DES MOINES, IOWA. — Brooke Pleger, a Bowling Green State University redshirt sophomore, was 11th in the hammer throw at the USA outdoor track and field championships Saturday.
Pleger’s throw of 208-feet-9 was the second furthest among the four collegians in the 16-person field and less than three feet shy of qualifying for the finals.
Amanda Bingson, of the New York Athletic Club, set an American record with a 248-5 throw to win the event.
The top collegiate finisher was Arizona State’s Chelsea Cassulo, who threw 223-11 to place sixth. Akron’s Brittany Funk was 12th at 208-5.
The meet capped off a tremendous year for Pleger, who won the Mid-American Conference Championship in the hammer throw, breaking the MAC championship record in the process. She was named the MAC most outstanding field athlete for the year, won the NCAA East Region preliminary round and was seventh at the NCAA national championship, earning first team All-American status.
