The Bowling Green State University club women's bowling team has hit its stride by capturing the season-ending American Heartland conference tournament in Monroe, Mich.
In addition the women's and men's team recently learned they have a combined nine Academic All-Americans on the rosters.
The tournament win was the first championship for the team since it was revived last season.
The Falcons marched through the 16-team event undefeated. In the Baker system, bowlers do not bowl individual games, but rather bowlers combine their efforts with each of five bowlers to bowl two frames in each game.
Head coach Kevin Taber said, "These kids have worked hard during the year to achieve this."
At the Monroe event, the Falcons defeated Notre Dame 3-0, Wright State 3-2, Ursuline College, 3-0, and Wright State (Red) 3-2. The latter team emerged out of the loser's bracket, only again to lose to the Falcons in the championship match, 3-0. The game scores in the title match were 187-143, 171-152 and183-152.
Taber said the lane conditions were very demanding for the tournament.
"I cannot be more proud of these young ladies," Taber said noting the team is entirely composed of freshman and sophomores.
The coach said he and the team worked very hard in the last half of the season on the mental side of the game.
Team members include Eastwood's Brandi Roller and Otsego's Emily Grosswiler Other members are: Brittney Poling, Kayla Miller, Trinnity Jackson, Hannah Benston, Nikki Sims, Kristina Jones, Elizabeth Freisland, Alexa Woodburn and Misty McCoy.
The women are currently ranked 25th and 22nd in the two national polls heading into the sectional tournament in Fairview Heights, Ill. March 8-10. The top four teams in this event advance to the national championships.
"This is a great momentum builder going into sectionals," Taber added of the win.
He also serves as coach of the men's team which will also compete next weekend in Illinois in their sectional tournament.
The women named Academic All Americans were Roller, Jones, Miller, Poling, Freisland, Woodburn, and Sims. Eastwood High School graduate Tommy Blanchard and teammate Shane Starbuck earned the honor for the men.
"These kids have put BGSU on the map nationally with their accomplishments with bowling and academics too, especially the women," Taber said. "This makes me even more proud as their head coach. The future looks bright."
