Bowling Green State University’s football teams is one of only two teams in the Mid-American
Conference that doesn’t have an interception by the defense this season.Opponents have attempted 95
passes against the Falcons and 65 against Kent State, the other MAC school without an interception.The
lack of interceptions concerns Dave Clawson, BG’s head coach, especially with so many returnees on
defense.‘‘That is something that we addressed in the team meeting (Sunday),’’ Clawson said. ‘‘Not only
have we not picked it, we have not had a lot of ball disruptions; we haven’t had a lot of pass
breakups.’’The Falcons have had eight pass breakups this season, an average of less than three per
game.‘‘I don’t feel it’s because of the scheme. Last year, we were good at turning the football over,
and we’re running a similar scheme with similar players,’’ Clawson said. ‘‘The last two weeks, we’ve
played against some pretty good quarterbacks (Kent State and Indiana) and some accurate quarterbacks,
and both of those guys have had time to throw.’’One aspect of making an interception is making the
quarterback uncomfortable, Clawson said.‘‘Part of getting the ball picked is creating pressure,
disrupting the timing, and getting the quarterback to throw off his back foot,’’ Clawson said.
‘‘Certainly in the Indiana game, we did not pressure the quarterback at all. If we would had been
playing on an old dirt field, he would still have a clean jersey.’’The Falcons have seven sacks and
seven quarterback hurries this season.Clawson is also unhappy with the lack of explosive plays, and
missed opportunities from BG’s offense in the 42-10 loss to Indiana.‘‘We had guys wide-open deep down
the field,’’ Clawson said. ‘‘In every one of those cases we lost a matchup up front … We only made
five explosive plays.’’Clawson said explosive plays can come from running a normal offensive play and
then making a defender miss, and from drawing up something special against the opposing defense.‘‘We
probably had seven shots, if we just block it up, throw it and catch it, we have a guy open, and we were
oh for seven,’’ Clawson said. ‘‘You are probably never going to go 7-for-7, but if you’re an efficient
offense, you’re hitting at least four or five of those.’’SENN: BG’s Paul Senn has been named the
Mid-American Conference East special teams player of the week.Senn blocked a punt and returned it 56
yards for BG’s only touchdown in the loss to Indiana. Senn’s return was the top play on ESPN’s
SportsCenter Saturday.Senn also recovered a fumble on an IU kickoff return.MONEY: BG received $250,000
to play at Indiana this year.The next two games in the series, the home team will pay the visitors
$200,000.The other games in the series are scheduled at BG on Sept. 13, 2014 and at Indiana on Sept. 9,
