STARKVILLE, Miss. — After Saturday night Dave Clawson won’t have to field any more questions about why Matt Johnson is playing quarterback.
Although the Bowling Green Falcons dropped a 21-20 decision to Mississippi State, Johnson played well on the road against an SEC school, giving the Falcons a chance to win the game.
Johnson was 20-of-34 passing for 224 yards, and he also ran for 29 yards and a touchdown on six carries.
‘If we catch everything we should catch, perhaps it’s a different outcome,’’ Clawson said. ‘‘I thought we left a couple of plays on the field, just through dropped passes.’’
Johnson gave credit his teammates for his performance against the Bulldogs.
‘‘The offensive line gave me great time all day, and the receivers played extremely well. They were able to get separation from SEC corners, which was a big task for them,’’ Johnson said. ‘‘We were able to move the ball all night.’’
The Falcons finished with 384 yards in offense, but were 4-of-11 on third down and 0-of-2 on fourth down conversions.
EMOTIONS: After a disappointing performance on the road at Indiana last month, the Falcons responded with a better effort against Mississippi State.
“We came down to an SEC program, and we fought with them for four quarters,’’ Johnson said. ‘‘The feeling is that we can play with anybody. We knew that going in, but it was nice to prove that to the rest of the country that was watching.
‘‘We wanted to show them that the Indiana game was a fluke ... This game is what we’re about,’’ he continued. ‘‘We just have to carry the momentum we have from this game into the next game. It hurts to lose, but we just have to move on to Toledo.’’
GATES: BG’s Jerry ‘BooBoo’ Gates was ejected from the game for his hit on MSU’s Dak Prescott late in the first half. Gates, who had an interception and five tackles before the ejection, was called for targeting an opposing player.
GREENE: BG’s Travis Greene fell just short of his fifth game with at least 100 yards rushing.
Greene finished with 99 yards on 15 carries against MSU and now has 810 yards rushing in seven games.
COHEN: With Chris Gallon going out of the game early in the first quarter with an injury, Jared Cohen got extended playing time at wide receiver for the Falcons.
Cohen finished with a career-high five receptions for 51 yards.
A transfer from Golden West College in California, Cohen was redshirted last season.
BYE: The Falcons have a bye week this week, and then host Toledo on Oct. 26
