Samuel, the Mid-American Conference freshman of the year in 2011, suffered the injury in practice last Saturday and had surgery on Monday. “He’s doing well and all indications are that he’ll be full strength by the end of May,” BG head coach Dave Clawson said Tuesday morning. “Those things happen in spring and when they happen you keep your fingers crossed and hope that it’s an injury that allows them to get back for the summer program and not require them to miss fall camp.” Clawson said the surgery “went well and it was a pretty standard straight forward procedure.” Although he played in only nine games last fall because of injuries, Samuel rushed for 844 yards and five touchdowns on 144 carries. He also had 15 receptions. Jordan Hopgood, who also played at running back last season, isn’t practicing this spring as he is “banged up,” Clawson said. That leaves Jamel Martin and John Pettigrew and walk-on Alex Carter as the running backs in spring drills. “Every spring it’s one position that ends up getting thin, and right now for us that’s running back,” Clawson said. |
