A new NCAA rule has provided men’s basketball teams an opportunity to get a jump-start on their seasons with extended summer workouts. The rule allows teams to practice with coaches for two hours per week for eight weeks in the summer. In the past, players worked out on their own in the off-season. “I think it’s very beneficial. We have two new guys and it gives them a chance to know some of the defensive principles and get comfortable and it gives us a little team bonding,” Bowling Green senior Jordon Crawford said. Spencer Parker, from Fishburne Military School in Virginia, and Richaun Holmes, from Moraine (Ill.) Community College, are BG’s new players for the 2012-13 season. Parker will have four years of eligibility and Holmes will have three. “They are going to be a big help this year,” Crawford said about the newcomers. “Richaun, he’s long, can knock down the open jump shot, he’s active and he can block shots. Spencer is real active and is a scrappy guy, crashes the boards well and is definitely going to be a contributor.” Louis Orr, who is starting his sixth season as BG’s head coach, said the newcomers give the Falcons length, athleticism and skill.
“You have two guys who are mature for younger, new guys,” Orr said. “They have to learn a whole new concept for the way of doing things.” At Tuesday’s workout Orr and assistants LaMonta Stone, Louis Twigg and Dennis Hopson worked with the majority of the 2012-13 team. “To be able to be hands-on at this time of year is great,” Orr said. “Two hours a week is not a whole lot of time, you just have to make the most out of it ... It gives you a little bit of a head start going into the season. “You hope there is a carry-over to when they work out as a team and on their own in open gym.” Orr said the work on the defensive end is beneficial as the Falcons can learn the concepts and the structure of what the coaches want done. The Falcons have three more weeks of workouts scheduled. “On defense we’re doing the same thing, so when it comes to games it’s repetition,” Crawford said. “On offense we’re doing different drills, things that we haven’t done in the past to switch it up a little bit.”
