AKRON - Bowling Green's softball team had only two hits Wednesday night in an 8-0 loss to Central Michigan in the Mid-American Conference tournament at Firestone Stadium.
Central scored four runs in the first, once in the second and three times in the fourth to end the game after 4 1/2 innings via the eight-run mercy rule.
The Falcons, seeded seventh, will try to stay alive in the double-elimination tournament this afternoon when they face arch-rival Toledo at 1:30.
BG is 27-23 overall, while eighth-seeded Toledo is 16-35. Central, the No. 3 seed, improved to 30-18.
Earlier in the day, BG opened the tournament with a 2-0 victory over sixth-seeded Ohio (26-28).
Against Ohio, Jamie Kertes and Jamie Imholz combined a two-hitter, and BG scored twice in the fifth.
Kertes the winning pitcher, going the first four innings, and Imholz finished to earn the save.
They each allowed one hit, combining for nine strikeouts and one walk. Imholz struck out six of the 10 batters she faced.
The Falcons were held hitless for 3 1/3 innings and then used their final three hits in the game to score their two runs.
Marisa Shook singled down the left-field line to start the inning and took second on Chloe Giordano's sacrifice bunt.
Adrienne Dick's single to left scored Shook.
The Falcons then loaded the bases on a Braiden Dillow's pinch-hit single through the left side and Hannah Fulk's walk.
Berger drew a walk to force home Dick to make it 2-0.
