Angry Virginia Tech next for Falcon football (09-18-12)

For Bowling Green’s players and coaches, nothing can be done about the outcome of
last Saturday’s game with Toledo.
The Falcons must now turn their attention to a bunch of angry Virginia Tech Hokies,
who were ranked No. 13 in the nation before suffering a stunning 35-13 loss to
Pittsburgh last Saturday.
Kickoff for the BG-Virginia Tech game is noon in Blacksburg, Va. this Saturday.
"That was a very emotional game for our guys (at Toledo). It’s our rival. We had
a great week of practice, a great week of preparation. The meetings and the
walk-through on Friday were very locked in,” BG head coach Dave Clawson said
Monday. "Our players put a lot into that game and they were very
disappointed.
"If we would have won that game, we would have had to find a way to refocus.
(Now) playing a team the caliber of Virginia Tech, if you don’t get them
refocused, you are in a world of hurt," he continued. "That’s
football; you have a game the next Saturday. You have to turn the page by
Monday, but it’s easier said than done.
"We are going to have to do a great job as a coaching staff. The leadership of
our team is going to have to do a great job of rallying the troops."
Clawson said the preparation for the game will not be focused on the outcome of the
Hokies game with Pittsburgh.
"It’s got to be based on what we do; our ability to execute our schemes and that
we play with effort," Clawson said. "For the emotional part of it, we
have to get ourselves ready regardless of the opponent."
CAMPBELL: BG’s Jairus Campbell suffered a foot injury in the loss to Toledo and will
miss the Virginia Tech game and could be out indefinitely.
Campbell was part of an experienced three-player rotation at defensive tackle with
Chris Jones and Ted Ouellet.
"It’s not good for us. Jairus is having a great year. He’s a great kid that’s
worked very hard and he’s overcome injuries in the past," Clawson said.
"We’re going to have to have somebody step up. He’s one of our best
players; so it’s tough losing him."
Campbell, a 6-foot-5, 310-pound redshirt junior, has been in on four tackles the
season, including 1 1‚Ñ2 tackles for loss that includes one-half of a sack.
Mike Minns, a 5-10, 317 pound freshman from West Palm Beach, Fla. is listed as
Ouellet’s backup. Taylor Royster, a 5-9, 252 redshirt freshman from Lima Central
Catholic, is Jones’ backup. Royster is a walk-on to the team.
The Falcons lost some of their depth at defensive tackle before the season started
when Hunter Maynard, who lettered in 2011 as a freshman, went down with a knee
injury that required surgery.
JONES: BG’s Chris Jones has been named the Mid-American Conference East defensive
player of the week for the second straight week.
A senior defensive tackle, Jones had four tackles, two sacks and 2 1‚Ñ2 tackles for
loss in the Falcons’ 27-15 loss to Toledo. Jones, who also had a forced fumble,
was part of a defensive line which held Toledo to 130 yards on the ground, 50
yards below its season average.
It’s the fifth time Jones has been honored by the MAC with the weekly honor.
PETTUS’ INT: The interception by Bowling Green’s Josh Pettus against Idaho on Sept. 8
has been nominated for the GEICO Play of the Year, Intersport has announced.
Midway through the third quarter, Vandals’ Dominique Blackman was intercepted by
Pettus after an impromptu tip drill took place between three Falcons. First,
Jude Adjei-Barimah had the ball go through his hands and deflect behind him to
Darrell Hunter. Hunter wasn’t able to haul it in, so Adjei-Barimah came flying
in to make the grab, but only popped the ball up another time. Pettus found
himself at the right place at the right time and the ball dropped into his
hands.

TV: Saturday’s game with Virginia Tech is scheduled to be televised on ESPNU. Tom
Hart (play-by-play) and John Congemi (analyst) are calling the action.
