PERRYSBURG - A 97-year-old man died Saturday in a crash on the Ohio Turnpike near the city.
Sanbamurti Shankara sustained injuries in the crash and was taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, Toledo, by Lake Township EMS. He later died at the hospital as a result of his injuries.
Shankara was a passenger in a 2001 Toyota Corolla driven by Vijay Sharma, of Solon, during the 10:24 p.m. crash.
According to the Swanton Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol, at that time, Sharma was attempting to exit the turnpike at exit 71, at Stony Ridge, when he lost control on the ramp and drove off the left side of the roadway onto the acceleration ramp to exit 71.
A tractor-trailer driven by Wayne Sheatler, Claysville, Penn., was entering the turnpike at exit 71 and was struck by Sharma's vehicle.
No other injuries were reported.
