Matthew Cook, an artist from Perrysburg, won  best of show honors at the Northwest Ohio Community Art Exhibition at Bowling Green State University for his painting "Ablution."
His work was selected  for the $500 top prize by jurors Shannon Benine and Erin Hoffman from 169 pieces by 66 area artists included in the show.
The NOWOH exhibit, which is open to artists from throughout the region, continues through this weekend. Gallery hours are Thursday and Friday 1 to 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 1 to 4 p.m. The show will close on July 22.
Other awards given were:
• Toledo Federation of Arts Societies Award, $300, Maria Spiess, Bowling Green), ceramics, "Fasten Your Seatbelt, It's Gonna Be a Bumpy Life."
• First Place 3-D, $150, Cori Crumrine, Bowling Green, ceramics, "Peach Form."
• Second Place 3-D, $75, Todd Matteson, Sylvania, ceramics, "Red Crackle."
• First Place 2-D, $150, Susan Stewart, Woodville, painting, "Monarch Gold."
• Second Place 2-D, $75, Kara Fallon, Bowling Green, photography, "Tommy's Bedroom."
• Best Young Artist, $100, Rachael Schreiner, Bryan, mixed media drawing, "Purpura."
• Special Mentions, Ruth Foote, Toledo, chromo photo, "Recollection" and Chelsey Hammersmith, Perrysburg, metals, "Black Keys Finger Armour."
• Honorable Mentions, Jordan Giovannucci, Maumee, printmaking, "Reason for Treason" and Brittney Combs, Bryan, photograph, "Breath."
The final Popular Choice Award will be selected by visitors and announced at the closing of the exhibition on July 22. Each vote costs $1, and the winning artist will receive the pot.
