Musical with Ball & Arnaz focus of Real Talk at Way
PERRYSBURG - The Way Library will screen the Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz musical "Too Many Girls" Thursday at 10 a.m. as part of the Reel Talk series.
Released in 1940, this was the first film to pair Ball with Arnaz. Set in a college, the musical features songs by Rodgers and Hart. The cast also includes Ann Miller, Eddie Bracken and Van Johnson.
Ball plays a spoiled rich girl sent to a small college in New Mexico. Arnaz performs his conga drum act from the Broadway show.
Film buff Phyllis Gallo will be the guest speaker.

Coates cleans up with 'Bats'
Lawrence Coates, a professor of creative writing at Bowling Green State University, has won the Bartheleme Prize for Short Prose.
Coates, who is known for his historical novels set in northern California, won the prize for "Bats," a story set in Northwest Ohio. The contest was for "flash fiction," stories told in under 500 words.
The prize, which caries a $1,000 award, is presented by the literary journal Gulf Coast, based at the University of Houston where Bartheleme taught. The judge for the competition was Robert Coover.
Coates' story along with those selected for honorable mention will be published in the spring edition of Gulf Coast.

Prizm offers workshop in making fused glass
PERRYSBURG - The Prizm Creative Community will host a Santa's Workshop in Fused Glass with artist Anne Huddleston on Thursday  from 6 to 9 p.m.
Location will be in Maumee, and will be announced upon registration.   
The class will be appropriate for new and experienced artists and craftsmen. The workshop should result in one or two finished projects, which could be bowls, plates, pendants, ornaments, night lights or candleholders,  
The class is limited to 12.  
The fee will be $20 for  Prizm members and  $25  for guests.

Murphy, Biddlestone on stage for Jazz on Maumee show
TOLEDO -   Bassist Clifford Murphy and singer Glenda Biddlestone  will perform   a Jazz on the Maumee concert Wednesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Aqua Lounge at the Grand Plaza Hotel, 444 N Summit St.
They will be joined by Vince Krolak, trumpet, and Kyle turner, piano, and guests vocalists Lauren Smith and LaRue Blue.
Cover charge is $15, $10 for members of the Art Tatum Jazz Society and  $5 for students.

Music & art benefit aids Haitian orphanage
TOLEDO -  Night Out to Raise A Home, benefit for a program for older girls at an orphanage in Les Cayes, Haiti, will be held Friday from 6 p.m. to midnight at the Blarney Event Center, 601 Monroe St. The event will feature six musical acts and art sale as well food and beverages, a cash bar and raffle.

Toledo Museum of Art buys Blenko glass pieces
TOLEDO - The Toledo Museum of Art has made a major purchase of pieces from  the Blenko Glass Company.
The company's work from the mid-20th century is receiving increased attention because of its integral role in  American Glass.
The museum has acquired 16 modern Blenko vessels. The Blenko Glass Company holds an important position in innovative American glass design between the time of Louis Comfort Tiffany and the Studio Glass Movement, according to experts in the field.
The Blenko Glass Company was founded in 1893 by William J. Blenko in Milton, West Virginia, and is now in its 120th year of operation. The company initially gained prominence for its ability to make large sheets of glass more quickly and for the development of a ruby color that did not change after reheating
