Redl's light display focus of tonight's museum panel
TOLEDO - Artist Erwin Redl will be a guest tonight at 7 for a panel discussion in the Toledo Museum of Art's GlasSalon to discuss his recent Guest Artist Pavilion Project  and the conception and production of his installation, "Floating, in Silence, "currently on view in the Glass Pavilion Courtyard.
The museum's Associate Director Amy Gilman leads the panel discussion.
The blown glass spheres are hollow and filled halfway with red liquid. The movement of the whole array of spheres is reflected in the movement of the red liquid in each sphere. As the suspended spheres move within the space, the liquid responds to the movement and maintains a perfectly flat surface within each sphere. Although no electricity is used, the illumination of the objects by natural light creates a unique and ever-changing display of light, color, and shadow.
"Somehow the installation has a musical quality," said Redl, who has a studio in Bowling Green. "The spheres become notes. The aircraft cables are strings precisely tuned and aligned. It's so much about imagining the wind moving the spheres not only visually but also aurally."
