BGSU cellist to perform a library atrium recital
Cellist Jesse Calcat will perform a recital in the atrium of the Wood County Public Library in downtown
Bowling Green Feb. 7 at 4 p.m.
With pianist Jingchao Zhou, he will perform "Lied von der Sehnsucht," a piece by contemporary
Indonesian composer Kusuma as well as J.S. Bach’s Suite No. 3 for Unaccompanied Cello, Johannes Brahms’s
Cello Sonata No. 1 in E minor, and Camille Saint-Sa?´ns’ "Allegro Appassionato."
Calcat is pursuing a Master’s Degree in Cello Performance, studying with Dr. Alan Smith, at Bowling Green
State University’s College of Musical Arts where he performs with the Graduate String Quartet and as
principal cello of the BGSU Philharmonia Orchestra.
Born in the Detroit area, Calcat began music studies at age 4 with piano, and began string studies with
cello at age 15. He studied at Oakland University and Wayne State University before coming to BGSU on a
full scholarship and assistantship to play in at Bowling Green State University.
Way Library to screen ‘Mud’
PERRYSBURG – Way Library screen "Mud" as part of its "Show Me the Movie" series for
adults Tuesday at 2 p.m.
Starring Matthew McConaughey, the 2012 film is the story of two adolescent boys who stumble upon
"Mud," a fugitive living in an abandoned boat tangled up in a tree on the swampy backwaters of
the Mississippi River. Mud says he is waiting to reunite with his old girlfriend; the teens romanticize
his situation, and Mud uses their innocence to his advantage, convincing them to help him repair the old
boat while evading not only the law but his enemies who are determined to kill him.
Terra hosts production of play about gay marriage
FREMONT – The Bowling Green State University Firelands Theatre will present the play "8"
Saturday at 2 p.m. at Terra State Community College in the Recital Hall in the Arts and Health
Technologies Center.
The production is a new documentary play by Dustin Lance Black about the legal battle over California’s
Proposition 8 that sought to ban gay marriage.
A panel to discuss marriage equality in Ohio will follow.
The show initiates a new collaboration between BGSU and Terra to offer students hands-on, job-based
learning in production, theater music and arts management.

BGSU grad John Pearse to conduct UT orchestra
TOLEDO – John Pearse, who received his Masters in Orchestral Conducting at Bowling Green State
University, has been appointed director of the University of Toledo Symphony Orchestra.
Pearse also will teach an instrumental conducting course.
At BGSU Pearse studied conducting with Emily Freeman Brown and percussion with Roger Schupp. He continues
to direct BGSU’s New Music Ensemble.
