If time is of the essence, Bowling Green resident, Marilyn West has the perfect recipe for you in this week's Cook's Corner.
Known to her family as "Hamburg Pie" and in the cooking world as "Hamburger Pie," West grew up on the dish and learned the recipe from her mother who made the pie for at least 20 years before West took over the trade.
"We grew up with this recipe - (Mom) was very busy, she was the executive secretary to the president of a company and I had three brothers and everybody was involved with church and sports and school so it was hungry mouths to feed - she'd get home and they would want to eat right now and this is just a quick recipe so that's why it became our favorite I think," West said.
Perhaps not ideal for Christmas or Thanksgiving dinner, West has her own ideas on the logistics of the dish.
"If you've got company coming over and they're going to play cards or something, it's a nice dish to have to the side," West said.
She prefers to accompany the pie with either cottage cheese or a tossed salad.
"If you're going to a church potluck it's a perfect dish," said the long-time medical administrative assistant of 32 years.
This favorite past-time is hotly demanded among her family.
"Whenever my brothers and I get together somebody always makes hamburg pie and everyone is always so excited about it," she said.

After 15 minutes of preptime putting together the ingredients, it's all about the layering there after with ground beef serving as the base of the pie. Once composed it takes only 30 minutes to warm it through in the oven.
If green beans aren't your vegetable of choice, West suggests substitutes such as corn, wax beans, or Italian beans.
"Any kind of vegetable that your family likes you can put in there, that's the fun part of it. It's really anything that's in your cupboard that you could add to it or subtract," she said.
Upon its completion, with just a pinch of salt to taste, comes a hearty, comforting lunch for any empty stomach.
"They just say this reminds me of home," West said, speaking for first-time tasters of her pie. "It's just your good old Irish German kind of a dish ... no frills"
No frills, is what makes this dish so perfect for West and her family.
"Cooking is not my number one priority, but I enjoy cooking if I have the time. I like things that are quick - I'm not a real detail person so if I cook it has to be fast."

Hamburger Pie Recipe

1 1/2 lbs. ground beef
1 lg. onion chopped
1 lg. can green beans
1 can tomato soup
6-8 potatoes
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt

Prep time: 15 mins.
Total Prepare Time: 45 mins.

Cook potatoes in pan. Brown ground beef with onion in a skillet, stirring until the ground beef is crumbly; drain. Mash potatoes. To assemble, sprinkle meat and onion mix with salt and spread mixture over bottom of 13 X 9 baking dish. Cover ground beef with tomato soup. Layer with green beans. Cover the whole mixture with mashed potatoes and bake in oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
