Heisey has tough day in left, Reds fall to Brewers 5-2

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Arms turned upward near his waist, Chris Heisey looked lost as the fly ball bounced a
couple of feet away on the warning track.
One play like that in a game can be tough enough for an outfielder. But it was the second misjudged ball
in left Monday night for the normally sure-handed Cincinnati Reds outfielder.
Milwaukee scored three runs on the two plays, and Wily Peralta pitched seven strong innings in the
Brewers’ 5-2 victory to hand sloppy Cincinnati its fourth straight loss.
Ryan Braun hit a two-run double in the third on which Heisey took a couple of steps in before retreating
as the high liner went over his head. The four-year veteran with 134 career starts in left field lost
Carlos Gomez’s high fly to the warning track in the fourth inning that turned into an RBI ground-rule
double that made it 4-0.
“Tonight was just one of those nights where I didn’t have a very good day,” Heisey said.
Peralta (11-6) allowed three hits in seven strong innings, including Billy Hamilton’s solo homer.
Francisco Rodriguez threw a 1-2-3 ninth for his 29th save.
Cincinnati’s Mat Latos (2-2) gave up four earned runs and eight hits in seven innings.
It could have been a much closer game had Heisey made those two plays in left.
“There were some things that if they would have happened slightly different, they could have changed the
outcome of the game,” manager Bryan Price said. “But, we didn’t earn a win today.”
The lights were on at Miller Park for an evening game that started under overcast skies, though Heisey
offered no excuses.
“As an outfielder, all you can do is trust your instincts,” he said. “Off the bat, it looked like it was
a sinking liner and it just hit another gear and got over my head.”
After losing Gomez’s fly in the fourth, Heisey tried to reach for the ball as it bounced over the wall.
Jean Segura scored from second on a play that could have gotten Latos out of the inning.
“I ended up running to a perfect spot, just couldn’t pick the ball back up when I turned my head,” Heisey
said. “It just disappeared into the bluish-white sky. I couldn’t find the ball.”
Gomez then scored on an error by Donald Lutz, subbing for the injured Joey Votto at first base.
An errant relay throw by second baseman Ramon Santiago in third allowed Segura, who had tripled, to
score.
Segura went 2 for 3 with two runs scored. He threw Latos out at the plate trying to score from third on a
high, slow chopper.
“He swung the bat really well today and made two fantastic plays defensively,” manager Ron Roenicke said.
“Great game for him. He looks really good out there.”
The Reds lost again after resuming the season with a three-game sweep by the New York Yankees. Price was
ejected Monday in the sixth inning by home plate umpire David Rackley after Devin Mesoraco got into a
heated argument over a called third strike on a checked swing.
The frustration started for the Reds after Price said he thought Braun wasn’t called for a checked-swing
strike earlier in the game.
“It just seemed in that series of events, those calls were all going against us. I didn’t care for that,”
Price said.
Peralta, a right-hander with a fastball in the high-90s, overcame an early bout of wildness to win his
second straight decision.
NOTES: Reds OF Jay Bruce, in an 0-for-15 slump, got the night off. … The last four homers hit by
Hamilton have come against the Brewers. … A kitchen fire at a Miller Park restaurant early Monday
morning left the restaurant, escalators, elevators and a few other areas in left field unusable because
of water damage. … Cincinnati’s Homer Bailey (8-5) opposes Milwaukee’s Jimmy Nelson (1-1) on Tuesday
night.
