WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (AP) — Authorities say two Arkansas police officers were shot and killed during a traffic stop and a short time later, the suspects were killed in a shootout with a sheriff and deputy.

Authorities say the sheriff and chief deputy were wounded in the shootout Thursday and have been taken to a hospital.

Police say the situation began when the two West Memphis, Ark., police were pulling over a white van on Interstate 40. They were shot and killed.

They say the van fled the scene, and was later stopped at a nearby Wal-Mart parking lot. Authorities say the suspects got into a shootout with the local sheriff and his chief deputy.

A hospital says deputy is in critical condition and the sheriff's condition was not immediately known.
