YORBA LINDA, Calif. (AP) — U.S. Navy Lt. Mike McGrath was just 27 years old, with a wife and two toddler sons in the U.S., when he was shot down and taken prisoner on his 179th bombing mission during the Vietnam War.
McGrath spent almost six years in North Vietnamese prisons, enduring torture and beatings before he was released in the spring of 1973 with nearly 600 men whose plight united a nation otherwise bitterly divided by the drawn-out war.
On Thursday, McGrath and 200 of those men, almost all of them former pilots, will reunite for a three-day celebration at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library & Museum that coincides with the 40th anniversary of a star-studded White House dinner hosted by President Nixon to honor their sacrifice.
At the time, Nixon was embroiled in Watergate, but the former prisoners — now in their 60s and 70s — credit him with their freedom. Nixon resigned a little more than a year after the dinner as he faced near-certain impeachment.

MOORE, Okla. (AP) — Nine-year-old Sydney Angle was "everywhere at once" when she was out on the softball field. Kyle Davis, 8, was nicknamed "The Wall" because of his size and presence on the soccer field. JaNae Hornsby, also 9, was the life of the party.
The three were among seven small children pulled lifeless from the rubble of the Plaza Towers Elementary School after a monstrous tornado raked across the building, leaving the one-story building a heap of bricks, broken concrete and twisted metal. In all 24 people were killed — including 10 children — when Monday's storm ravaged Moore and a slice of Oklahoma City.
Landon McNeill, Angle's softball coach, lovingly called the charismatic kid "a pickle." He said he was with Sydney's parents Monday night as they waited at a church for news about their daughter. Her older sister, who was also at the school, made it out safely, and they held out hope that Sydney had ended up with someone else and would turn up.
"Sydney was real quirky," McNeill said. "She could be anywhere and have fun doing it."

LONDON (AP) — A brazen, brutal attack near a military barracks in London on Wednesday afternoon left one man dead and two suspects in the hospital. British Prime Minister David Cameron said the attack appeared to be terror-related.
The attack occurred in the southeast London neighborhood of Woolwich, just a few blocks from the Royal Artillery Barracks.
Two men reportedly attacked another man. Witnesses said the two men were shot by police and a number of weapons — including butchers' knives — could be seen on the street, which was splattered by blood.
French President Francois Hollande, speaking at a press conference in Paris with Cameron, said it was a British soldier who was killed. Cameron didn't immediately confirm that fact but the Britain's Ministry of Defense said it was urgently investigating the attack.
Cameron did say said there were "strong indications" it was a terrorist incident.
"We have suffered these attacks before, we have always beaten them back," Cameron said. "We will not be cowed, we will never buckle."
Live television images of the scene showed a trail of blood staining a pavement, cordoned off streets and crime scene investigators marking the scene.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A Chechen immigrant shot to death in central Florida after an altercation with an FBI agent had several ties to that of one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects who authorities were questioning him about at the time.
Ibragim Todashev's Chechen roots and mixed martial arts background mirror that of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the Boston bombing suspect killed in a shootout with police last month. The two also had lived in the Boston area.
Todashev, a 27-year-old mixed martial arts fighter, was fatally shot by authorities early Wednesday at his Orlando home during a meeting with the agent and two Massachusetts state troopers, authorities said. The agent was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Three law enforcement officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Todashev had lunged at the FBI agent with a knife. However, two of those officials said later in the day it was no longer clear what had happened. The third official had not received any new information.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A Chechen immigrant who was being questioned about his ties to one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects was shot to death by authorities early Wednesday after he lunged at an FBI agent with a knife, officials said.
Ibragim Todashev, a 27-year-old mixed martial arts fighter, was gunned down at his Orlando home during a meeting with the agent and two Massachusetts state troopers, authorities said. The agent was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
The FBI gave no details on why they were interested in Todashev except to say that he was being questioned as part of the Boston investigation. But some of his former roommates said that Todashev knew one of the Boston bombing suspects, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, from mixed martial arts fighting in Boston and that the FBI was asking about him.
Public records show Todashev lived in Watertown, Mass., just outside Boston, last year.
