ACCOMAC, Va. (AP) — A former volunteer firefighter and his girlfriend are set to appear in court on charges related to rash of arsons set on the Eastern Shore of Virginia over the past five months.

Virginia State Police say Charles R. Smith III and Tonya Bundick are responsible for all but a handful of the 77 fires that were set on the Eastern Shore since November.

On Wednesday, they'll make their initial court appearance on charges related to an abandoned house set on fire in Melfa late Monday night. The pair was arrested following a traffic stop early Tuesday morning shortly after the blaze was reported.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the pair had an attorney. Though they were charged Tuesday in only one fire, state police say more charges are likely.
