Senate gives pre-dawn OK to Democratic budget

WASHINGTON (AP) — An exhausted Senate gave pre-dawn approval Saturday to a Democratic $3.7 trillion budget for next year that embraces nearly $1 trillion in tax increases over the coming decade but shelters domestic programs targeted for cuts by House Republicans.

While their victory was by a razor-thin 50-49, the vote let Democrats tout their priorities. Yet it doesn't resolve the deep differences the two parties have over deficits and the size of government.

Joining all Republicans voting no were four Democrats who face re-election next year in potentially difficult races: Sens. Max Baucus of Montana, Mark Begich of Alaska, Kay Hagan of North Carolina and Mark Pryor of Arkansas. Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., did not vote.

The vote came after lawmakers labored through the night on scores of symbolic amendments, ranging from voicing support for letting states collect taxes on Internet sales to expressing opposition to requiring photo ID's for voters.

The Senate's budget would shrink annual federal shortfalls over the next decade to nearly $400 billion, raise unspecified taxes by $975 billion and cull modest savings from domestic programs.

Police search for boy suspects in Georgia baby killing

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia woman said Friday a teenager trying to rob her at gunpoint asked "Do you want me to kill your baby?" before he fatally shot her 13-month-old son in the head.

Sherry West wept while she told The Associated Press that she pleaded with the gunman and a younger accomplice who approached her Thursday morning while she walked near their home in coastal Brunswick.

"He asked me for money and I said I didn't have it," she said. "When you have a baby, you spend all your money on babies. They're expensive. And he kept asking and I just said 'I don't have it.' And he said, 'Do you want me to kill your baby?' And I said, 'No, don't kill my baby!'"

Police were combing school records and canvassing neighborhoods searching for the pair. While police have said the two boys were between the ages of 10 and 15, the mother says she believes the younger boy was as young as 5 years old.

She said the teen fired four shots, the first into the ground. West didn't see a shell casing ejected, and said she assumed the gun wasn't real.

New York man admits to conspiracy in faked drowning

A man who faked his drowning off a beach on New York's Long Island, touching off an extensive and expensive air and sea search, has accepted a plea bargain that includes a 90-day jail sentence and a $37,000 bill.

Raymond Roth, 48, of Massapequa, pleaded guilty Thursday to fourth-degree conspiracy. Prosecutors said he and his son, Jonathan Roth, plotted to collect about $400,000 in life insurance.

On July 28, Jonathan Roth told authorities his father went for a swim at Jones Beach and never came back. Responders searched for him for several days, while Roth was actually on his way to his timeshare in Orlando, Fla., prosecutors said.

"This case easily could've turned tragic had an actual emergency occurred while this defendant sent first responders on a wild goose chase," Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice said.

Roth's wife found emails between Raymond and Jonathan Roth discussing the plot, and authorities were alerted.

On Aug. 2, Raymond Roth was issued a speeding ticket in Santee, S.C., and told police there he was returning to New York to meet with authorities. He did not show up for that meeting and was not arrested until Aug. 6.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A chef who told police he cooked his wife's body in boiling water has been sentenced in Los Angeles to 15 years to life in prison for second-degree murder.

David Viens gave a rambling, 45-minute speech during Friday's sentencing, saying the story he told police about cooking the body was a lie.

He said he was disoriented at the time after having surgery for injuries he suffered when he jumped off a cliff.

The 49-year-old Viens was convicted in September of killing of 39-year-old Dawn Viens in 2009. Her body was never found.

In a recorded interrogation presented at trial, Viens said he cooked her body for four days to get rid of evidence. Authorities said he leaped off a cliff after learning he was a suspect in her disappearance.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A 61-year-old French man has been arrested at Philadelphia International Airport and charged with impersonating a pilot after airline officials found him in the cockpit of a plane scheduled for takeoff.

Police say Philippe Jernnard of La Rochelle, France, was wearing a white shirt with an Air France logo and had a black jacket with epaulets on the shoulders.

Officer Christine O'Brien says the crew of an outbound US Airways flight found Jernnard in the jump seat behind the pilot at about 6:20 p.m. Wednesday. She says he became argumentative and was escorted from the plane.

Police found Jernnard with a counterfeit Air France crew member identification card.

Jernnard was arraigned on state charges. Police say they expect federal charges to be filed on Friday.
